When it comes to Cappadocia, a hot air balloon flight is a must. The way the landscape looks from the bird’s-eye view at sunrise is absolutely breathtaking. This kind of flight gives you a completely different perspective of the region. Cappadocia is one of the few places in the world with the perfect climate for such flights as most mornings in Cappadocia are perfectly clear with little to no breeze. That is why the balloon flights take place in Cappadocia all year round except for the windy, rainy or foggy mornings which are rare.

How does a balloon flight go? First of all, you will be picked up from your hotel pretty early, between 04:00 and 06:00 am depending on the season. Then you will be taken to the take-off site, where the ground crew will be busy inflating the balloons with hot air. That is a great spot for some amazing photos with flashes of fire in the morning twilight. When your balloon is ready you will get into the basket, get a safety briefing from the pilot and off you go!

Flights normally last for about an hour. After lifting the balloon to the utmost height (about 700-900 meters) and giving your the best view of Cappadocia, your pilot will lower the balloon and drift over the valleys, villages and fairy chimneys.

When the flight time is up, the pilot usually lands the basket directly onto the trailer. The gound crew help you climb out and offer you a glass of champagne to celebrate the new experience. After that, you will be taken back to your hotel.

  1. It’s a good idea to book a flight as soon as you know when you are going to be in Cappadocia because quite often the demand is so high that all the balloon companies are fully booked for days ahead.
  2. All the balloon companies in Cappadocia are equal in terms of safety as they are all licensed by the same government authority – Turkish Aeronautical Association. If they don’t meet the safety standards, they don’t get the license/have their license revoked, and so cannot operate the flights. The pilots are licensed by the same government authority and have to pass regular flight checks.
  3. You need to be ready at the reception of your hotel 5-10 minutes ahead of the pick-up time that is given to you the day before the flight. Transfer vans often gather passengers from 7-10 different hotels so everyone need to be ready when the transfer van arrives to keep things nice and smooth.
  4. The price of the balloon flight includes transfer from and to the hotel, breakfast, the flight itself and the treats offered after the flight. There are no additional costs except the tips to the crew which are voluntary.
  5. Children aged 0-6 and pregnant women are not allowed to fly due to safety regulations.
  6. If your flight gets cancelled due to weather conditions, you can re-schedule your flight for another date or get a full refund.
  7. When choosing what to wear for the flight, you should probably consider comfort first and dress in layers as as even the summer mornings in Cappadocia can be rather chilly.
  8. The number of passengers in the basket is usually between 20-28. Passengers are separated into compartments, so that the basket is balanced and everyone can enjoy the view.
  9. Most of the flights take place before sunrise. But in winter there are also afternoon flights. They are quite rare but sometimes they are the only chance for you to rise up over Cappadocia, so it’s good to remember about this option.
  10. Try to book the flight for your first morning in Cappadocia. This way, if the flight is cancelled, you will have a better chance to re-schedule it for the next day.
